The Peoples’ Party presents Emilie Simons Live in Hong Kong at Grappas Cellar, 25th-Sep-2010 [Ticket Available Now]

Facebook event page

*******
TPP is proud as punch to announce that multi-award winning, French electro pop chanteuse Emilie Simon will be joining us in HK for a special performance on the 25th Sept.

need we say more?

Probably…

Well, she sold out the City Hall on her last visit to HK two years ago, so this is an ultra rare chance to see her in the ever more intimate surrounds of Grappas Cellar. We’d strongly advise getting your tickets in advance.

Born in Montpellier in Southern France, Emilie Simon grew up bathed in the Mediterranean sun and immersed in the sound of clarinets and electronic melodies. Surrounded by music from an early age, Emilie was winning critical plaudits as early as 2003, when she released her self-titled debut. The LP went on to win Album of the Year at Victories de la Musique, a prestigious French music award ceremony, and Emilie’s plush, artful soundscapes swiftly garnered commercial success.

Allowing her music and inspiration to flow naturally, Emilie wished to imbue her second album with a more wintry and polar vibe. Coincidentally, in the midst of her search for sounds for the album, she was contacted by film producer Luc Jacquet to compose the original soundtrack for his Oscar award winning documentary film ‘La Marche de l’empereur’ (March of the Penguins). Emilie’s score went on to triumph once more at the Victories de la Musique winning the 2006 award for the Best Original Film Soundtrack.

2006 also saw two more Emilie Simon releases. Emilie’s third studio LP ‘Végétal’ dropped in April, and featured not only clever wordplay inspired by flora, but also sound samples taken from actual plants. The LP won (her now customary) Victories de la Musique award, this time for best Electronic Album. This was followed later in the year by ‘The Flower Book’ – a compilation of her first three records along with live material from her US tour.

Now residing in New York, the birthplace of so many artistic hybrids, Emilie has produced her most recent, accessible and personal album yet – ‘The Big Machine’. Working with sound engineer Mark Plati (David Bowie, Alain Bashung), mixer Renauld Letang (Feist, Gonzalez) and a string of musical contributors from members of Arcade Fire to a children’s choir, The Big Machine is a triumph of sensual songwriting and complex, old-school electronics.

On this album, Emilie’s experimental inclinations also involved the clever use of traditional Chinese instruments as a vestige of her long stay in the heart of Chinatown. How appropriate.

So come on down to The People’s Party at Grappas Cellar on Sept 25th for an intimate and magical evening with Emilie Simon.

Fragile is a sense of temporary existence.

It’s a green blossom, or an autumn tinted leaves, it’s a newborn, or a white haired elderly. It is the beginning and the end. It is an imperfection, therefore it is not meant to last. And because it doesn’t lasts, we would treasure the melancholy beauty of the object, not dare to blink, won’t miss a thing.

Fragile is a sense of honesty.

We all living in a cynical world, we are taught to armed ourselves. Growing spikes and armor, hiding our true self. We roar and try to fight people off. Being able to opens up the vulnerable side requires relatively much more courage. This purity of expression has its audience, it’s like a candle light in the ever changing world, and you’ll reach out your hand to protect it, and treasure the warmth it projects.

One of the Hong Kong’s finest post-rock group fragile choose the world without language, a storyteller without words. By using white noises as the silk to a cocoon, they wrapped up the most vulnerable emotions ever existed to a man. Life and death, cold and warmth, it is for you to decide what lines between the music notes. It is for you alone, for your very own precious emotion.

fragile expresses what human nature is all about, and our nature, is simply fragile.

有疑問請聯絡:info@chopxticks.com

“An orchestra of the heart, a playground for the long lost sporadic thoughts of giving in or getting back. Pg.Lost is a swedish band of many directions, but most of all a band throbbing with great melancholy grinding against the precious high hopes of not just individual human thinking and feeling, but also contrasts within pushing the sonic boundries of endless instrumental experiments of prolonging. Pg.Lost recently recieved a lot of press attention because of an American individual attracting a record deal by falsely using their music as his own. But then again Pg.Lost does have a way of sounding like a deep emotion or unresolved issues, so no wonder a fraction of us get confused, and start mistaking their music for something private.”

Pg.Lost feature members from Eskju Divine and Last Days Of April and has supported bands like MONO, Khoma and Efterklang. 20th of June 2007 Pg.Lost released the “Yes I Am EP” on the Swedish label Black Star Foundation (www.blackstarfoundation.com). 29th of September Pg.Lost released their first full lenght album “It’s Not Me, It’s You!”. 11th of December 2009 pg.lost released their second full lenght album “In Never Out” which consists of over 50 minutes of instrumental music and shows a darker and heavier side of pg.lost. The album was recorded by pg.lost and mixed by Magnus Lindberg at Tonteknik Umeå.

The Peoples’ Party presents Handsome Furs Live in Hong Kong at Rockschool, 4th-Aug-2010 [Ticket Available Now]

Facebook event page

When we talk to our lovely regular gig goers, there’s one show that consistently gets brought up as a front runner for ‘gig of last year’: Montreal’s Handsome Furs. Their debut performance with us last September has gone down in local show folklore, and judging by the ear-to-ear grins of the departing crowd that faithful eve, it was clear we all wanted more.

How wonderful it is then that the band were as enamored with Hong Kong as the audience were with them. We wanted them back, they wanted to come back. Everybody wins.

Bio time:

There isn’t a couple in indie rock that exudes more musical passion and sexual energy than Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry – and their’s is a refreshingly uplifting love story of boy meets girl. Dan, whilst performing with his other band (as frontman of indie heroes Wolf Parade) locked eyes with a bewitching girl in the audience during a gig in Vancouver, Canada. That girl was short-story writer Alexei and by the end of the night, the two were kissing by the merch-table. Awww.

Planning a romantic vacation around Scandinavia, they had a flash of inspiration: why not make sweet music together, form a band and make a tour out of it? And so it was, that the fruit of their labour, Handsome Furs (named after one of Perry’s short stories) was born.

The thing is, the shows turned out to be a great success, and earned them rave reviews everywhere they performed. The couple recorded some songs upon their return home and the buzz around the duo went into overdrive. In no time, they were snapped up by the legendary Sub Pop label – home to the likes of Nirvana, CSS, The Postal Service and Foals amongst others.

Mixed by Arlen Thompson (Wolf Parade, Arcade Fire) their debut LP Plague Park (inspired by their first Scandinavian tour) was released in 2007 to much critical acclaim, and 2009’s follow up Face Control (inspired by an extended Eastern Europe tour) has seen the couple cement themselves as purveyors of essential dance rock.

These are songs about contemporary life’s weighty issues. Themes of lust, love and mournful heartbreak paint the picture of the common man at the bottom of the 21st century – part desperate romantic, part enemy of the state. Struck by the perseverance and resilience of the residents of the places they visited, especially in Russia, the group manage to create thumping synth-powered anthems which make emotional pain sound heroic.

Musically, they’re fast and upbeat. Think a seductive mix of Beck-esque vocals, skuzzy guitars and pulsing beats – creating a plague of gritty, sweaty danceable rock. Their sonic heritage can be referenced from the likes of the Velvet Underground, Joy Division and Suicide, though the Handsome Furs’ unique live delivery is what sets them apart from all others.

Live, the couple are unrelenting in their raucous energy, and their on stage presence is electric. Dan and Alexei pour their souls into the music, and each other, making for an explosive chemistry unrivaled in its raw, magnetic and infectious intensity. A performance guaranteed to leave you feeling inspired, passionate, lustful and utterly human.

So if you missed them first time round (or just are in need of that HF fix), here’s your chance to witness the unadulterated glory of Handsome Furs, live in Hong Kong. Ask your friends, they know what we’re talking about.

Tickets – Adv. $150, Door $200
Available July 30th from:
ROCKSCHOOL – 2/f, 21-25 Luard Road, Wan Chai

CASPIAN

When drowning in the appropriate sound, you find yourself achieving the same fundamental effects in your soul as coming up for air has on the body. Caspian is that appropriate sound. An instumental rock band from Beverly, Massachusetts formed in Autumn of 2003, these four young men have crafted a sound that is immediately riveting, emotionally devastating, and achingly passionate. Characterized by towering walls of sound, oceanic guitar work and vicious rythymic elements, Caspian is a band that knows how to imbed itself within the part of you that refuses to easily surrender. Take a walk around the bands home co-ordinates and you might find some clues. Tan stretches of sand and the infinite blue horizon of the Atlantic might be bigger influences here than anything else. The jam packed seasonal cycle might explain the bands desire to cover everything from gentle and placid to furious and destructive, all while maintaining a unified musical sensibility, and a fierce sense of adventure. Live in an area like this and you’re bound to create something hopeful, inspiring and downright massive. Caspian wants to bring you to places like this and to places we all havent seen yet. Let them take you. For friends of: Explosions In The Sky, Mogwai, Pelican. Caspian is a rockband from Beverly. Nobody sings“.

The Peoples’ Party presents Caribou Live in Hong Kong at Grappas Cellar, 1st-July-2010 [Ticket Available Now]

Facebook event page

The Peoples’ Party are in celebratory mood this July 1st. It’s our National Day! Wahoo! It’s also Canada’s day. Far out. With so much to celebrate, we wanted to get in on the act. So we’ve booked Caribou, one of Canada’s finest, along with our fave local electronica artist Choi Sai-Ho (he of S.T. fame) for a party of our own. Grappas Cellar, July 1st, be there or square.

A Canadian from small-town Ontario, Dan Snaith has been a leading figure in electronic music over the past decade. A mathematics scholar and an ingenious multi-instrumentalist/composer, he surprised critics and fans with 2007s ‘Andorra’, a brilliant, electro-tinged pop breakthrough that made most year-end “Best of” lists and won Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize. The Flaming Lips also hand-picked Caribou to perform at New York’s All Tomorrow’s Parties festival last year. High praise indeed.

The latest album from Caribou, 2010’s ‘Swim’, is packed with expertly constructed, infectiously delightful sounds that sing with soul. Taking a hint from the disco-fueled electronic revival, Caribou continues to evolve on his fifth full-length taking cues from the changing times while retaining his indie-electronic roots. With its absorption of dance culture sounds weaved within subtle pop frameworks, Swim is Caribou’s masterpiece — the record he’s wanted to bring to fruition for as long as he’s been making music.

In Dan’s own words: ”I wanted people to put the record on and not be able to say, ‘This sounds like so- and- so.’ I want people to say, ‘This sounds like Dan!’ It’s what everybody wants – to have their fingerprint on the music they’re making. I feel like I’ve achieved that to a greater extent than I have in the past, and thats exciting.” Fans have embraced the new sound. Swim was even one of the rare electronic releases to find its way onto the US’ Billboard chart this year.

The current tour marks a dramatic change in Caribou’s live performance. Performing as a full band (including two drummers!) there will be a strong video element also included into the mix.

So do join The Peoples’ Party on July 1st and experience Caribou’s multi-sensory bonanza!
