When Tony C (Touch guitar) and Julien F (drums) started the band Chevreuil in 1998, nothing could augur the unique musical atmosphere that would come out of their meeting and that would result in a first 7inch split with ULAN BATOR (sport 2000, Ghetto Blaster 2001 CHATEAUVALLON 2003) As well as in a unique way of conceiving the stage system.
In 2003 they record “chateauvallon” with Steve Albini who will carefully take up the sound of the “touch guitar” on 4 amplifiers and this mechanic drums with which they create organic, sophisticated and spatially unprecedented pieces.
The music of Chevreuil mixes sample parts guitar, that spins its web, catches melodies between its strings, briefly changing into sharp “riffs”, while the drums gets alternatively wild and metronomic without losing its strength to gain fluidity.
It’s through the stage (Europe and USA) that the band could turn its music into “art” as well as “rock”, that one beholds, amazed, without really understanding its language. The tours and successive concerts, with oxes, us maple, rumah sakit etc…proved that their language was universal.
The question that arises now is: what does this 4th album “Capoeira” & the EP “Science” brings after so much achievement?
If we live in a 3 dimensions world, Chevreuil creates a 4th one. The synthetizer combines with the guitar to make the music penetrate the body still deeper. A kind of guitar mutation. Each piece leads-through a lot of subtilities-to a more rock “riff”. It’s no longer a guitar or a synthetizer, but both at the same time connected to four amplifiers, becoming a magnetic guitar, a hybrid instrument with one foot in the rock universe, and the other in the atmosphere of electronic music.
The melody goes deeper, and each piece, constantly on the verge of collapsing, has the accuracy of movements of an assembly line. Chevreuil never gives way to “free” outbursts, each note is always skilfully measured. So Steve Albini produces here a rock album & EP that gives drums, touch guitar an unprecedented dimension and sphere of activity, as to open a new field and create a new form of music.
Ep “science” is strongly related to “Capoeira”.
“SCIENCE” & “CAPOËIRA” was recorded without “overdub”, in a “live” situation..
